Rain is an internet service provider.

Rain is a data-only wireless network in South Africa that launched Africa’s first commercial 5G service in September 2019. Rain operates over 3,000 towers using 3600 MHz 5G spectrum and offers unlimited home internet from R649 per month with no contracts.

About Rain

Rain launched commercial operations in February 2018 as a data-only network. The company does not offer traditional voice-only plans. Headquartered in Cape Town, Rain built its business around wireless broadband rather than legacy telecom services.

In September 2019, Rain switched on Africa’s first commercial 5G network using 3600 MHz spectrum. This frequency band provides strong capacity in urban areas where tower density is high. Rain operates over 3,000 of its own cell towers and leases additional infrastructure from Vodacom and MTN to extend coverage.

Rain provides 5G coverage to over 7 million households. Coverage is strongest in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban, and Pretoria. Rural and suburban areas rely on Rain’s 4G network where 5G has not yet reached.

The company positions itself as a lower-cost alternative to fiber and traditional mobile broadband. Rain competes directly with Telkom fixed wireless, Afrihost fiber resale, and the mobile data offerings from MTN and Vodacom. Rain’s advantage is speed of deployment. A wireless install takes a day compared to weeks or months for fiber trenching.

Rain has announced plans for 5.5G and AI-driven network optimization as part of its next-phase infrastructure upgrade.

Plans and Services

Rain’s home 5G plans are structured by speed tier. The entry-level unlimited plan delivers up to 30 Mbps at R649 per month. The 60 Mbps tier costs R849 per month. The premium plan provides full 5G speeds above 200 Mbps at R1,029 per month.

rainOne is the bundled offering at R819 per month. It combines unlimited 5G home WiFi with free calls and data for 2 mobile SIMs. This makes rainOne a full household solution covering home internet and two phone lines in a single bill.

The Rain 101 5G smart router is the standard hardware for home plans. It connects to Rain’s 5G network and provides WiFi throughout the home. Placement near a window facing the nearest tower gives the best signal.

Rain Loop is a 5G WiFi speaker combo device starting at R475 per month with 25 GB of data. Rain 4G plans are available at lower price points for areas outside 5G coverage.

All plans are month-to-month with no contracts and no fair usage policy. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing cycle.

Speed Test Tips

Place your Rain 5G router near a window facing the closest tower before testing. This gives the strongest signal and the most accurate speed reading. Close other devices on your network during the test.

Run tests at different times. Rain’s 5G network performs best during off-peak hours (early morning, midday). Evening congestion between 7 and 10 PM can reduce speeds, especially in dense urban areas like Sandton and Sea Point. Compare your results against your plan’s speed tier to check if you are getting the performance you pay for.

Test your Rain connection

After logging into your router, run a speed test to confirm Rain is delivering the throughput your plan promises. The widget below uses M-Lab's open NDT7 protocol — see the full speed test page for details on how the measurement works.
